The Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga are about 550 km from Marrakech, roughly a 9-hour drive. We split the journey over two days with an overnight stop in the Dades Valley or a similar highlight. The closer Zagora desert, around 350 km, works perfectly as a two-day round trip.
The best months are March to May and September to November, when daytime temperatures are pleasant and nights in the desert are comfortable. Summer can be very hot in the dunes, while winter offers clear skies and cool, refreshing evenings.
